A Not So Good Interview with Sandra Good

This interview of Sandra Good was definitely not what I would consider to be standard.  Throughout the interview Sandra ignored Barbra Frum's questions and continually went off on her own psychotic rantings.  Good appeared to be extremely hostile and very confrontational throughout the interview, however Frum managed to keep "her cool" and ask the questions she believed to be important.  She did this by asking her the important questions even though she knew she would not get a straight answer.  Then when Sandra went on talking about something crazy and not pertaining to the question, Frum would ask the question again in hopes she would get a straight answer.  When this failed she would move on to the next question in order to keep the interview going.

If Frum had have been more aggressive or confrontational I believe the interview would have went very differently.  If she had have been more aggressive I believe the interview would have been much shorter because Good was always looking for a reason to hang up the phone.  Frum also could have crossed a line during the interview and in turn lost her job.  Also, with the nature of whom she was interviewing, Frum could have ended up on the bad side of the Manson Family and got into serious trouble with them.  However, she managed to keep calm and continue, which was necessary with the type of person she was speaking to because Good was looking to make Frum upset.

One question Frum asked that I believe was very effective was, "Ms. Good, how come, you are talking about trees that you care about and yet you don't mind killing men?"  I believe that this was an effective question because it put Good on the spot and made her think for a second about her moral beliefs.  Frum is making her think about how she could be so upset over the environment and how corrupt the world is, yet it does not bother her to see a man killed. This question evoked a weak and quickly conceived answer that allowed Frum to continue asking Good important questions for the interview.

There are many things to think about and remember when preparing interview questions or doing an interview.  One major thing is to know the type of person you are interviewing.  It is important to have some background information on whoever you are interviewing and to know their personality so you can ask important questions while not crossing any sort of personal line with them.  It is also important to be straightforward when asking questions and to ask questions that will make the interviewee think and evoke a quotable answer rather than a simple yes or no.  Another thing to remember is to maintain your cool during the interview when faced with an evasive person.  You have to keep a level head and not give in when the person you are interviewing tries to get to you. Getting upset will only get you in trouble and give the other person the satisfaction that they have gotten under your skin.

As a student journalist there are a lot of things you can learn from Frum's technique in case you ever have an interview the "went wrong".  One thing is to calm and not get frustrated with whoever you are interviewing.  If you get upset it can cause many complications and Frum managed to hold herself well when speaking with Good.  Another thing you can learn is to focus on what is important.  Even when something goes wrong you should continue asking the questions that are important and not let anything keep you from getting you answer.  As well, be persistent and don't give the other person the upper hand.  If they do not give you a straight answer than ask them again until they tell you what you need to know.

If I had the opportunity to interview one person it would be Sir Paul McCartney.  I would want to interview him over anyone else because I love his music both before and after the demise of the Beatles.  I think it would be interesting to get a chance to speak with him and ask him some questions about his music, his personal life and also some of his inspirations.  I believe that an interview with Paul McCartney would be easy because he seems to be very laid-back and after watching previous interviews he has done he does not appear to be hostile or aggressive in any way.

Reflection on Courthouse Visit

If I were a journalist I would not like to do court or crime reporting.  I do not think that I would like to do court or crime reporting because the overall atmosphere would not be very pleasant for most cases.  I would not enjoy sitting in a courtroom all of the time, taking notes on a murder or rape case because after hearing about such events it would start to mess with you.  I could not see anyone enjoying this type of journalism because of all the horrid and sinister things that you would be hearing about most of the time.

I do believe that it would be challenging to be objective when reporting news about a case.  In many, if not all cases, it would be difficult not to side against the person responsible for the crime.  I would find it hard only to report what happened and not my opinions because would have plenty. The people who commit many of these crimes are evil, despicable people and I would definitely want to voice my opinion on them.

Overall, I did enjoy my experience in the courtroom.  The case we listened to was very interesting and it was also interesting to find out how a court case is actually looks like in real life.  There were some parts of the bail hearing that I found were very boring and dragged out, but the case in general was engaging.  During the hearing I felt bad for the police officer being questioned because he was trying to do the best he could talking about the incident, but the lawyers were asking him questions he wasn't sure of because he wasn't given all of the facts.  Also, I didn't feel bad for the woman who committed the crime because what she did was very stupid.

While there are many professions involved with the court system, none of them really interest me.  I did for the most part enjoy the hearing, but I would not want to actually be involved with the case or any other cases.  I would not want to have to sit through that all of the time because after so long it would get extremely repetitive and I would not enjoy the stress involved with any of those professions.

Caught in Lies

I have never considered that the news I have read/heard/watch was fabricated, at least from a well known or popular news provider.  I have, however, heard before of news stories with incorrect details because many times reporters do not have all of the information concerning what they are writing about. The stories are never fully incorrect though and only one small detail was incorrect.  I have never considered many news stories to be fabricated because the whole purpose of news is to provide the public with accurate and true facts about a particular story.  When a news story is fabricated then we are not getting the degree of news we are expecting to receive and it is more of a story than it is a news story.

I was surprised after reading the two articles because I didn't realize that credible news papers such as the Washington Post and the New Brunswick Telegraph-Journal would publish incorrect or factitious news stories such as the ones in the article.  I never would have expected a journalist who worked for a newspaper such as these to fabricate news simply to get a story out. I could have expected less credible companies to publish stories such as these, but it is truly surprising form a company who seems to be so trustworthy.

Yes, I do agree with Jack Shafer's assertion concerning liars in the field of journalism.  I am sure that there are many journalist out there who do not have the skills required to do that job and they would have an easier time making something up than taking the time and effort to get actual information.  Journalism is a fast paced and stressful career and stories are expected to be written and printed in a short period of time.  If someone did not have that proper abilities expected of a journalist then fabricating a part or an entire story would be that easiest way, but not correct way, to gt out a story on time.

I do believe that colleges and universities should be doing a better job of graduating journalism students who can handle the responsibility and pressure of being a journalist.  Many students who are graduating and going into a career of journalism would not be fully prepared for how stressful being a journalist is and because of that would take many shortcut throughout their career.  I am sure that many of the fabricated and incorrect stories circulating today are from students who were not fully prepared during schooling  for the career and are making up stories and adding incorrect information simply to meet deadlines and produce an interesting story.  This is the case even though most consumers want correct information form the news they read.

Yes, I believe that a newspaper ombudsman helps when issues of ethics arise in a news article.  They would help because they put into light that a journalist has made an error or made up a story and this helps to make sure that unethical journalist are seen for who they really are.  As well it is important that someone responds to reader complaints so that the public's voice is heard about factitious stories.

Hard News Vs. Soft News

Hard News

Example #1
The article Microsoft makes debut in wearable market with fitness device is an example of hard news.  While the subject of this article appears to be entertainment related, the article itself is very business related and includes more information about the cost and release dates rather than the device's functionality and features.  The article does not appear to be soft news simply because of the style of writing used by the author and the way their content is described.

Example #2
The article Arrest shows police using new strategy to charge suspect extremists is an example of hard news.  The content of this article is not necessarily meant for entertainment, but to inform the public of the new lengths the Canadian government and law enforcement are going to in order to ensure we will be faced with no more acts of terrorism.  The subject matter contained in this article is very serious and it could not be considered sift news because of how the content is written and relayed onto the audience.

Soft News

Example #1
The article Man Brakes into Home Dressed as a Teletubby, Steals Leftover Chinese Food is a clear example of soft news.  The article is very entertaining and the content is not one bit serious although a crime was committed.  The title of this article basically tells the story because it consists entirely of a university student breaking into someones house dressed as Laa-Laa from the Teletubbies and stole Chinese food from the refrigerator.  As well, the article is very brief and does not go into much detail about the incident.

Example #2
The article Why Did the Tortoise Get Sick? Because I Swallowed A Turtle! is an example of soft news.  This content of this article is clearly not very serious and talks about a tortoise named Lola who swallowed a turtle pendant.  The story contained in this article was written entirely for entertainment because it contains no information that would concern the everyday person.  The story is very short and is clearly meant to attract consumers through human interest.

Borderline News

The article Justin Bourque to sentenced today is an example of what I believe to be somewhere in between hard and soft news.  The content of this article could be considered hard news because of the fact that it involves Justin Bourque, who not long ago killed three cops and injured others.  This article may be considered soft news as well because recently it has seemed that Justin has faded from the public eye until now.  As well, this article is not very long and seems to be written in order to entertain the public as to how severely he will be sentenced.

What Is Newsworthy?

Saskatoon family want to keep raccoon as pet

Timing - 4/4
This new story is not a popular or well known story.  I gave it a 4/4 for a mark because they released the story as soon as possible which is important for a story of such small importance.

Significance - 1/4
This story technically only affects the Hook family in particular and possibly a few other families living in the Saskatoon area.  I gave it such a low mark for significance because the story does not affect many people.

Proximity - 3/4
While this news story did happen close to home, specifically in the same country, I did not give it full marks because it deals with a specific law in the city of Saskatoon.  This event while close to  New Brunswick still does not affect us much.

Prominence - 1/4
This story has little to no prominence because it only affects the family involve and it is not a worldwide news story.  Other than possibly a few friends of the family and the few others who may be dealing with the same situation no one would really care or be affected by this story.

Human Interest - 3/4
This story may appeal to the emotions of others who have been in this situation or those who simply have a love for animals.  I have given this mark because while the story may not affect many people overall, many of those who do read it would be able to feel an emotion connection to the family.

Final Newsworthy Mark - 12/20

Dead babies in Winnipeg storage unit 'tragic beyond relief'

Timing - 4/4
This article was posted the day after the events it discusses occurred.  The timing was perfect for this story because the information was released quickly to the consumer which is needed for a story such as this.

Significance - 1/4
This story while tragic does not affect many people.  Other than the family of the babies found and the person who commit the offence no one else is truly affected by this event.  I gave it such a low mark because of the fact that this story holds little significance compared to some others.

Proximity - 3/4
This story occurred in the city of Winnipeg, Manitoba.  Although it did occur in Canada, it didn't occur close to New Brunswick so it will not hold as great effect to us as it may someone from Manitoba.

Prominence - 1/4
There is not much known about this story other than the fact that the bodies of three children are found.  The murderer or specifics about the children are unknown so the story cannot hold much prominence.

Human Interest - 4/4
This story may not effect many people, but it will defiantly play with the emotions of those who read the article.  The subject of this story can easily evoke deep emotions from the reader because of how upsetting the content is.

Final Newsworthy Mark - 13/20

Do spoilers actually improve a car's performance?

Timing - 2/4
The timing of this story's release was not very well thought of because spoilers on cars have been used for many years.  I gave this article such a low mark because if people wanted to know this information then they probably would have wanted to learn it before now.

Significance - 3/4
This story is very significant in today's society because nearly everyone owns a car and a large percentage of these vehicles have a spoiler.  This fact alone proves that this story will affect many people although not necessarily in a big way.

Proximity - 4/4
This particular story would cover a very large area because spoilers on cars can be found everywhere across the world.  Compared to some other stories this one in particular has the possibility of personally affecting anyone from anywhere in the world.

Prominence - 4/4
This story has a lot of prominence because of the fact that many cars of all makes and models can have a spoiler.  Everything form a minivan to a Ferrari can have a spoiler which makes the information found in this article relate-able to a vast number of consumers.

Human Interest - 2/4
This story, although affecting a large audience, does not carry much human interest.  Most of the people who purchase a car with a spoiler do not care how it will affect the operation of their vehicle, but rather  how it makes the car look.

Final Newsworthy Mark - 15/20

Joan Rivers died of complication during medical procedure

Timing - 2/4
This article was originally posted a month after the death of Joan Rivers.  I gave it such a low mark because information such as this should be released closer to time of the person's death because sadly in today's day and age deaths such as these quickly fade away from the audiences mind.

Significance - 3/4
This story affects many people because of the fact that it involves a celebrity.  People tend to ravel themselves up in information such as this and can be affected greatly by information revolving around a celebrity such as Joan Rivers.

Proximity - 4/4
This story affects nearly everyone form the North America because of the fact that it involves someone as famous as Joan Rivers.  Compared to other stories this one may have a further reach because many people of either watched some of Joan's work or at least have heard of her.

Prominence - 4/4
This story holds great prominence because it involves someone who was very famous at some point.  In this case it involves information on the death of Joan Rivers.  If this story were about just a regular person who few people know than it would be much less prominent.

Human Interest - 4/4
This story can be very emotional to many people who enjoyed the works of Joan Rivers during her lifetime.  This story can evoke emotions of sadness to those who enjoyed the work of Joan and because of this it holds a great amount of human interest.

Final Newsworthy Mark - 17/20

Hurricane Henry Hits Hard

Last night, Sunday, October 5th, Hurricane Henry passed through Blackville, New Brunswick, Canada causing thousands of dollars in property damage to the resident's homes and vehicles.

In its wake, Henry completely destroyed 22 buildings, including the Blackville town hall and Valu Foods, in the Blackville area.  As of now $100,000 in property damage has been reported with that number continuing to rise by the minute.

Jimmy Walker, a victim of the hurricane, said that the hurricane took his trailer, his truck and all of his dogs.  "I was just laying down to go to bed when I heard the dogs barking real loud and my truck alarm go off.  When I went out to check, my truck was rolling across the lawn and my dogs were gone. Then when I went to go into my house it was picked up by the wind and got flung into a tree."

Many more incidents like Mr. Walker's have been reported across the village.

Another victim, Joyce Wright, said the siding and shingles were blown off of her house, her car was pushed across the lawn and her yard was littered with debris.

Many scientists are saying that this storm may have been one of the most destructive in recent years and it shows no signs of slowing down.  Everyone in the Maritimes is asked to brace themselves if they have not yet been affected by the hurricane because it is moving rapidly and northward.

One scientist, Dr. Terry Parker believes that the hurricane may not slow down until it gets close to the northern most point of Canada.  Based on its rapid movement and unhindered power almost all of the Maritimes may become victims of the hurricane's 120 km/h winds and 150 mms of rain.

Hurricane Henry had recently passed through the cities of Fredericton and Saint John in New Brunswick as well, with nearly $750,000 in damages caused.  Scientists believe that the hurricane will continue through Miramichi and move on to Nova Scotia by Tuesday. "This could result in hundreds of thousands more dollars in damage, if not more", said hurricane expert Frances Peterson.

Starting with the Basics

Apple iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus breaks sales records Summary
This article discusses how Apple Inc.'s iPhone 6 sold 1 million more units within three days of its September 12 announcement than the iPhone 5.  The new was available for pre-order in 10 countries and sold over 10 million units after its announcement.  The lead of this article is effective because it provides the most important fact in the beginning and it creates the potential to hook someone who is interested in the new phone.  One quote included in the article was,"While our team managed the manufacturing ramp better than ever before, we could have sold many more iPhones with greater supply and we are working hard to fill orders as quickly as possible," which was said by Apple's Chief Executive Tim Cook. The most important information was told first which was that the Apple iPhone 6 sold 10 million units in its first weekend. Yes, the story does have a good ending because although it is less exciting than the opening it still provides interesting information for the consumer.

The real value Minecraft brings to Microsoft Summary
This article discusses the announcement that Microsoft Corp. will purchase the game-making company Mojang AB for 2.5 billion dollars during the week of September 14-20.  Microsoft will purchase the company because of the game Minecraft and the profit they can make off of this highly popular franchise.  I believe that the lead is effective because it provides the reader with just the right hook and information to get them to continue reading to get the rest of the story.  One quote found in this article was, “Some things that are special to us about Minecraft is the broad set of gamers that play this game,” which was said by Phil Spencer whom is head of Xbox at Microsoft.  Yes, the most interesting information was said first which was that Microsoft Corp. purchased Mojang, the creators of Minecraft for 2.5 billion dollars.  Yes, the article has a good ending because it reflects on Minecraft, the reason Microsoft made the purchase by talking about its educational possibilities.
