A Vacation Gone Wrong

*Spoiler Alert!  Do not read if you do not want Far Cry 3 ruined on you.*
What happens when you put a "naturally talented, but directionless" man on an island full of psychopathic pirates, ruthless warriors and a sadistic slave trader with his friends lives on the line?  You get Jason Brody.  On this island Jason Brody begins as a man scared of killing, but eventually becomes a pirate killing machine.  There are many problems Jason is up against, but he manages to save his friends and defeat the enemy, but in the end will he choose to save his friends or stay and protect the island?

Jason Brody is 25 years old, 6'0 feet tall and was born and raised in Los Angeles, California.  He has two brothers Grant and Riley and a girlfriend named Liza Snow.  Jason, his brothers and his friends went to Rook Islands on vacation to celebrate his brother Riley getting his pilot license.  Shortly after they arrived they were kidnapped by a group of pirated under the leadership of an insane pirate Vaas Montenegro.  Jason escapes Vaas's camp and makes it his mission to rescue his friends from the island and kill the men who run it.

Jason starts out as a city boy who has never used a gun before in his life, but in order to save his friends he had to learn.  Over the coarse of his vacation Jason uses many different weapons for various situations such as sniper rifles for long range, explosives for large groups and silenced weapons for stealth.  He also learns many skills such as knife takedowns, better healing and faster movement on land and water.  These skills help him overcome the various challenges he is faced with on Rook Islands whether it be a combat situation or finding various relics and collectibles throughout the islands.

Jason has met many allies during his vacation.  The first person he meets is Dennis Rogers.  Dennis introduces Jason to the Rakyat, a group of tribal warriors fighting for Rook Islands, and helps him earn the respect of the warriors and their leader Citra.  The next person he meets is Willis Huntley, an ex-CIA operative who gives Jason vital information on important people on the islands.  The last ally he meets is Sam Becker, a infiltrated agent who poses as a mercenary for Hoyt Volker and collaborates with Willis Huntley.  Sam helps Jason take down Hoyt Volker, the main obstacle on his journey to helping the islands inhabitants.

Jason also meets many enemies in his time spent of the islands.  The first enemy he meets is Vaas Montenegro.  Vaas was once a member of the Rakyat and was a great warrior, but the got addicted to the drugs Hoyt Volker brought to the island.  Hoyt then turned him into a pirate who would do anything for him.  Vaas and his pirates are the people who kidnap Jason and his friends and Jason has many other unfriendly encounters with Vaas throughout his time on the islands, ending with Vaas's death at the hands of Jason.  The second enemy Jason meets is Bambi "Buck" Hughes, a mercenary working with Hoyt.  Buck buys Jason's friend Keith from Hoyt.  Jason is sent on a wild goose chase looking for an artifact for Buck to get his friend back.  Once he gives the artifact to Buck and gets Keith, Jason realizes it was never Buck's intention to let them go, so Jason ends up killing Buck and saves his friend.  The last and biggest enemy Jason faces is Hoyt Volker.  Hoyt Volker is the leader of the privateers, a group of soldiers working for him, and a slave trader on the island.  After losing his alley Sam and his left ring finger Jason eventually murders the sadistic and mentally unstable Hoyt Volker and essentially frees Rook Islands.

Jason Brody is not much of a hero, but he managed to save his friends and defeat the island's most deranged and psychotic men.  He started out as a city boy looking for a thrilling vacation and in some ways that is exactly what he got.  In the end, he became a ruthless, murderous warrior who thrives on death.  "He's a fearless daredevil, a dedicated friend, and a bastion of untapped potential, but he feels that something critical is missing from his life. One day he will find what he's missing, and fulfill his potential. When that day comes, nothing will be the same for him again."

Trading Places with the Chief

"You have been called upon to serve, you will be trained... and you will become the best we can make of you. You will be the protectors of Earth and all her colonies..."  If I could trade places with any fictional character it would be Master Chief from the video game series Halo.    He is a super soldier who is very strong, has shields and is one of the most respected Spartans in the UNSC.  Who wouldn't want to be him?  Although being Master Chief would be the definition of awesome, there are some reasons why I wouldn't want to be him.  In the following paragraphs I will give reasons why I would want to be Master Chief, but I will also give some reasons why I wouldn't want to be him.

One reason I would want to be Master Chief is because he is a super soldier.  There are so many things he can do such as jump higher, lift heavier things and withstand a lot of damage compared to a normal human being.  The only thing is I wouldn't be using these assets for saving the world as Master Chief does.  I would be fooling around with these abilities and having fun.  I would love to have such abilities because there would be so much more things I could do that I couldn't do now.  Examples are lifting heavy things for my father, being able to reach high things and fall without getting hurt as much.

Another reason I would want to be Master Chief is because of what he has done for the universe.  He has saved the universe multiple times from alien threats such as the Covenant, the Flood and the Prometheans.  Even though it would suck risking your life all of the time, it would be cool to have so many accomplishments over your head.  From the games, you can see the prices Chief must pay while doing this and sometimes it is not always worth the trouble, but I would love to have done such good things for humanity.

The final reason I would like to trade place with Master Chief is the respect everyone of his superiors and inferiors have for him.  I know he has earned it, but I would love for people to respect me as much as everyone does him.  Wherever Chief goes there is usually another soldier or civilian surprised and happy to see him and they treat him  like a hero, which he is.  I wish I could be treated like that wherever I went.

Even though I would definitely trade places with Master Chief, there is also a  reason I wouldn't want to be him.  The reason I wouldn't want to be him is because of the emotional things he went through in his life.  When Chief was a child he was kidnapped and scientists did experiments on him without permission.  He had to leave his parents and he had no choice.  Also, all of the experiments he went through would have been painful and some people he met died from them.  Master Chief had to witness a lot of people die, some soldiers, some civilians and he lost his AI and only friend left Cortana.

As you can see there are many reasons why I would want to be Master Chief and why I wouldn't want to be.  He has so many awesome abilities and he is well respected, but it came at a great price.  He has no one left that was close to him and really took the time to get to know him.

The Time Capsule of 2012

Part 1- My Five Items
My five items for the time capsule would be:
One of the items I would put into the time capsule would be a Canadian Flag.  The main reason I would put this in is so they could compare it with their own.  They would be able to see if the Canadian Flag has changed in design, if it even will.   I would also put the flag in because it is very important to our country today.  It is how other countries know who we are now in 2012.
Another item I would put into the time capsule would be a photo of my family and my family tree.  If they saw a picture of my family they would be able to learn a bit about us and how we lived.  They could also see my family tree and possibly find out they are of some relation.  Using the picture of my family they could also compare it to their own and see the kinds of differences between the families of now in 2012 to then in 2112.
The next thing I would put into the time capsule would be Canadian money.  Money could and will most likely change over the years.  Money of today in 2012 could be rare and collectable so it would be exciting if they found some.  They could compare the coins and bills of now to theirs of the future to see how the design and values have changed.  Maybe in the future they will not even have coins or bills, but rather money will be only on credit cards.
Also, I would put newspaper clippings of current events into the time capsule.  Using these clippings they would be able to learn a little about what is going on in the world in 2012.  I would put only very important events such as the death of Osama bin Laden and the problems within the Middle East.
The last thing I would put in the time capsule is a copy of Halo 4.  I would put this game in because it is amazing and very fun.  They could use it and compare different features with video games of the future.  Also, maybe aliens will come to earth so they can compare the aliens with those in the game.  They could see how accurate, if at all, the game is.  Aliens will probably not come to earth in 100 years, but it is possible.
Part 2- My Letter To the Future
Dear Readers of the Future,
My name is Riley and I am 15 years old.  I live in New Brunswick, Canada with my parents, brother and sister.  My parent’s names are Krista and Robert and my brother’s and sister’s names are Ronan and Raelyn.  I enjoy playing video games, browsing the internet and watching TV in my spare time.
There are a lot of important things that have happened and that are going on in our world today.  On big event happening now are the missiles being fired into Israel in the Middle East.  Israel has been having many problems in the Middle East lately.  Another event that happened awhile ago was the death of Osama bin Laden, a very dangerous terrorist of our time.  Other important events that have happened in the last century were the attack on the World Trade Center and the earthquake in Haiti.  Not many important things happen here in our community, so there is not much I can talk about.  There has also been nothing to important happening in my life recently.
Sincerely,
Riley

The Adventure of Tommy

“Holy ole jump ins Tommy, where were ya?  You only live two or three minutes up the road and I told you to come over about half an hour ago.”
“Oh Jimmy give me a break, I went for a little adventure.”
“Well I gotta be home in about ten minutes, so does Chris and Shane.  You’re no fun Tommy.”
“Well wait a sec till ya’ll go; I gotta tell yous what just happened to me.”
“You better make it quick; you already wasted all my play time.  We were gonna go down to the park for a swing, but so much for that plan.”
            “Well, it went like this…….”
So I just left the house after ya’ll called and got to the side walk.  When I looked down the road I noticed Miss McCully out washing her car so I figured I would be nice and go for a visit.  When I went up to her and asked her how she was doing this fine day she just ignored me, so I figured I would just wait around.  After a while she was still ignoring me so I started raining down questions on her.  She eventually got fed up with me so she just spun around and drenched me with the hose.  I figured then that she didn't want me around so I started on my way again.
Once I got up the road a little ways I ran into Mr. Huffington, the delivery man.  I stopped and asked him what he was up to.  He said he was on his way to deliver some chips to the grocery store when his truck broke down.  He seemed to be awfully busy because he wasn't saying anything, so I figured I would treat myself to a bag of chips from his truck.  When I started to walk away he was screeching and hollering something at me and I figured it was about the chips, so I started running.
I ran back behind Mrs. Jane’s house and ate my chips.  They were salty and crispy and … Sorry kinda got outta hand there. So, as I was saying I ran behind Mrs. Jane’s house and I noticed that she was staring at me the whole time with a sour looking face on.  She scowled at me saying “What in the good father’s name are you doing back here you rotten little scoundrel!”  I tried to explain to her I was running from the delivery man, but she didn't really want to know in the first place.  She took her paper out and started to role it up so I went on the run again.  I jumped up on her shed, hopped on top of the fence and climbed up her neighbor’s tree.
I really think the worst mistake I made was climbing down from that tree.  I ended up in Mr. Roger’s back yard and worst of all he was mowing.  The old grouch started chasing me around the yard just yelling and hollering like a mad man.  Luckily, his granddaughter was in her play pen and started screeching at the top of her lungs, so he had to stop the mower and calm her down.   This gave me a chance to escape.  I hopped the fence and ended up behind Killer’s, the old German Sheppard, dog house.
Actually, maybe that was the worst mistake I made, I was never so scared in my life.  I figured it would be safe if I climbed up on his dog house, but that only got his attention.  He put his front paws on the side of the dog house and started barking like I don’t know what.  I was so scared I booted him right in the snout and he backed right up and started whimpering.  I jumped off of the dog house and ran straight here.
“Well that’s my adventure.”
“All of that happened in half an hour.  Holy crab apples!”
“You bet it happened in half an hour.  It was quite the crazy time.”
“Sounds like it.  You are lucky you had a good reason for being late.  Well we gotta go; we will talk to ya tomorrow.  Same place, same time.  Next time come straight here Tommy!”

My Top Five Shooter Series

I am doing my assignment of my top 5 choices for best shooter series on Xbox.  This is fully my opinion and all of the series I chose I have played most of the games.  I will start at number 5 being my weakest choice then I will make my way to number one, which will be my strongest choice.  I will base my opinions on the campaign or story mode of the game and the multiplayer of the game.

Number 5 on my list is the Gears of War series.  The series includes a total of three games.  Gears of War follows the troops of Delta squad and their mission of saving the remainder of humankind from the Locust Horde.  This series has a well put together story that features a lot of drama and hardcore killing action.  Over the course of the series Marcus Fenix and the rest of Delta squad face plenty of problems.  My overall experience with the campaigns was good, and I really enjoyed playing the series.  Gears of War 3 kind of ruined the series for me because I didn’t find it as enjoyable as the others.  The multiplayer of the series is definitely not my favorite.  I am a bigger fan of first person shooter, which Gears is not.  It is fun I have to say, but not my favorite.

Number 4 on my list is the Borderlands series.  This series consists of two games.  The Borderlands series is about a group of vault hunters who search for a treasure filled vault on the planet of Pandora.  The campaigns of these games are very long and fun.  There is always something to do on Pandora whether it is story missions, side missions or just killing bandits.  The planet of Pandora is very large, in both games, and there are tons of things to see and do.  Also, this series features tons of guns, shields, class mods and grenade mods.  The multiplayer of this game is a four player co-op of the campaign.  This makes the enemies stronger, but better loot is dropped.  This series is one of my favorites because there is always a lot to do in the games.

Number 3 on my list is the Mass Effect series.  This series consists of 3 games.  Mass Effect is a third person sci-fi shooter which follows the story of Commander Sheppard and his mission to save the galaxy from various alien races.  All three of the games from this series have a very good story and get progressively better for each sequel. There is a lot to do in this game whether it is the main story or the few side missions.  The multiplayer was only introduced in Mass Effect 3 in which you team up with three other players to complete a short mission with varied objectives.  You also earn credits in which you can buy crates with various goodies for use in the multiplayer.  The multiplayer is very fun and it is a different experience every time, but a competitive mode would be much more enjoyable.

Number 2 on my list is the Call of Duty series.  This series consists of eight games.  This is a first person shooter series in which the games often switch between the battles of World War 2 to modern times to the Cold War.  Each game has a campaign mode which is enjoyable, but not the strong point of the series in my opinion.  I find that the campaign has many different environments and many weapons, but the combat gets boring a few missions in.  The strong point of the series for me is the multiplayer.  There are many different game modes to play and many different guns and perks to experiment with.  Call of Duty multiplayer is set up so you can play however you like and that is why I enjoy it.  The Call of Duty series also features a co-op game mode called Zombies.  In Zombies you fight zombies who increase in difficulty as you progress in rounds.  Zombies is possibly one of the best things about the series although it is only in two of the games.

Number 1 on my list is the Halo series.  This series consists of seven games.  This is a first person shooter sci-fi series about the conflicts between the human race and an alien race named the Covenant in which most of the series revolves around the story of Master Chief.  The campaign of these games have a great story to them and the series also has a long and deep back story behind what is shown in the games.  Each game has beautiful environments for each level and very fun combat.  In my opinion the greatness of the series declined with the release of Halo Reach, but will hopefully be regained with the new game Halo 4.  The other Halo games, at least the ones I have played, have a great story especially the ones that follow the story of Master Chief and Cortana.  The multiplayer for this series is very enjoyable.  The maps are beautiful and the series has many guns to fit with each player’s preferred style.  The multiplayer of the series has many modes and maps that vary in size for a game mode that goes along with it. Halo Reach and Halo 3 ODST have a co-op multiplayer mode called firefight in which you and your team fight against groups of Covenant.  This game mode is fun if you are not in a competitive mood.  Halo Reach and Halo 3 have forge mode in which you can build and create your own maps which is very fun if you are feeling creative.

The games I have just listed are my top 5 shooter series.  I used my opinion and thoughts for each.  These series are all very fun, and I recommend each if you are a fan of shooter games.  I hope my thoughts and opinions of these games have helped.

Finding Forrester Review

Finding Forrester Review

The movie Finding Forrester, starring Sean Connery (Forrester) and Rob Brown (Jamal) is actually very good and I enjoyed it. The main topic of this film is writing.  It was produced in 2000 by production company Columbia Productions and directed by Gus Van Sant. Other important actors in this film are F. Murray Abraham (Crawford) and Anna Paquin (Claire).

This film is about a teenage boy, Jamal, who enjoys writing and playing basketball.  During school tests and exams he really shines in writing and is asked to go to a private school even though his class work isn’t the same case.  Over the course of the film Jamal meets William Forrester, a famous writer, who helps him improve his writing. Jamal’s teacher Crawford gives him many problems which Jamal must overcome with the help of his newfound friend Forrester.

Two very good qualities of this film are the acting and the music/soundtrack.  The acting was very good because the characters were very realistic in which they showed many different emotions toward each other.  The actors did well playing their parts and their differences made the story more intriguing and interesting.  The music/soundtrack was a good quality because it featured many different types and styles of music.  This gave the movie diversity between the different scenes and settings.

I believe the message or theme of this film is that even without blood relation, friends can be the best family of all. The movie shows this when Forrester befriends Jamal and Forrester, with no family of his own, begins to think of Jamal as family.  They start out by not liking each other, but this slowly evolves into a great friendship.

I find that the film Finding Forrester compares to the film The Other Guys.  The films compare because they both have a similar story which is two completely different people end up becoming friends because of an incident.  In the case of The Other Guys, the two men are partnered together to complete a case and start out hating each other.  As they go through more and more things together they form a great friendship.

The Dark Knight Review Critique

I chose this review on The Dark Knight because the movie was very good and definitely on of my favourite movies.  Also, this review is written very well and gives enough information without completely spoiling the movie.  Here are some other reasons I chose this review.

This review talked about some strong characters and explained them very well.  For example, the reviewer talked about how well the Joker played his part in this movie.  He was very sick and twisted and he explained this well.  Also, this review gives enough information about the story and setting without ruining the full effect of watching the movie.  He tells enough information about the movie so people can decide whether they would enjoy watching it without giving to much away.  My favorite genres of movies are action and horror.  If I could do a review on any movie it would probably on this movie because it is very good and one of my favorite movies.

Writing Inventory

Riley Sherrard
I do not write in my spare time, but there are many things I do other than that.  In my spare time I enjoy playing video games, go on the computer and watch television.  Some of my favorite kinds of writing are adventure and horror.  I enjoy these types of writing because they are full of suspense and action.  The kind of writing that comes easy to me is narrative because I find it easy to make up something then to have a set topic to write about.  The kind of writing that I find challenging is essay because I have a hard time writing about a set topic.
I get my ideas for writing from my head.  All my ideas I usually think of off the top of my head when the topic is given to me.  I wrote a descriptive piece of writing in writing class called The Run.  It is about a horse and her foal running away from the ranch they were raised in to the mountains because they hate the life they are living.  The story I have just spoken about is one I am especially proud of because I have put a lot of work into it and I believe it is one of my best.  I usually only write one draft for school assignments and then add to it as I find and correct errors.
I think my voice is one of my strengths as a writer and also how I can keep my readers interested.  I think some of my weaknesses as a writer are my word choice, punctuation and sentence structure.  I am not sure what my favorite thing to write about is because I do not write very often.  My goals as a writer this semester are to become an overall better writer.

The Run

Riley Sherrard

We run.  Run through the mountains, my foal close to my side. The sweet crisp air enters my nostril and exits my parched mouth.  The explosive thumps as my hooves slam against the rocky ledges of the the mountain.  My foal pants asking me to stop but I can’t.  Alarm fills my mind as I think about my rider catching up and hauling us back to that horrible ranch below the mountains.  We run onward.

I remember growing up on that ranch.  The smell of dung burnt my nostrils as I stood by my parents.  The only thing we had to eat was the rotten leftovers of my riders supper from the night before.  I felt imprisoned, trapped in a prison with no escape because of the electric walls surrounding me.  And the dreadful wait for my rider to drag me hopelessly from my imprisonment was everlasting.  Then when he put on the saddle, hopped on my back and rammed the jagged spikes of his spurs into my vulnerable sides forcing me to bolt forward.  I didn’t want my foal to live this, to be ran to near death like me, my parents and all the other horses.  That is why we are running away, as far away from that horrible ranch as we can.

Now I start to slow down.  My foal begins to trot slowly from exhaustion.  We both come to a stop and I look out over the mountain ranges.  I once again breath in the cold crisp air which freezes my mouth and throat.  The frozen breeze blows through my tangled mane.  I look down at my foal and stare into its gloomy unsure eyes.  I slowly lift my head again and begin to step deeper into the mountains.
